Our Head Chef, Phil Boardman, is currently filling the kitchen with new chefs, who are bringing their particular skills and ideas with them. The team is looking very good indeed and we’re looking forward to their creativity making it through to the restaurant over the next few weeks.

It has to be said that it’s always worth checking into the website for late room availability for weekends. We do get booked up a long way in advance, but we do also get rooms cancelled for various reasons and it’s always nicer to have a full house.

Clocking up the miles

Speaking of clocking up the miles, I would say about half of our guests get out on to the South Downs Way. We are situated at a particularly beautiful and interesting part of the walk and from the lane opposite the Wingrove, you can walk westwards and down to the village of Firle and the Ram Inn, about an hour and a half’s walk away. You can then walk back along the old coach road, past Charleston Farmhouse and the village of Berwick, where you can stop off at beautiful Berwick Church, with its paintings and friezes by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.

Feeling magnanimous

Our current offer – stay monday, tuesday or wednesday night and dinner is included in the room rate along with breakfast – is proving to be a real hit! Not that I’m surprised because, those of you who have stayed with us know, our food is very good.

Anyway, because we’re feeling magnanimous (preparing Christmas menus can turn even the hardest of hearts), we’ve decided to keep the offer going for a bit longer. So, come and stay! Pootle in the village or clock up the miles on the Downs and then come back to the fireside at the Wingrove, with a lovely dinner to come.

Kicking through the leaves

Kicking through the leaves in the woods this morning, I realised what a sharp turnaround from summer to autumn we’ve had this year. So I thought I’d post a picture to remind us (well, me, really) that we did have a summer and people did sit outside in the sunshine and drink chilled white wine in a perfect summer’s day kind of way.
